Trip Reports in Portable Document Format (PDF)

Ornifolks have authored a number of trip reports using MS Publisher™ and distilled into PDF format.  These can be downloaded and viewed if your PC has the free Adobe Acrobat™ Reader software installed.  Note that some of the files are quite large (due to maps and graphics) which may take some time, depending on the speed of your modem connection.  The largest report would take about 5 minutes with a 50K connection.

The reports are usually published in folded booklet form, and can be printed in landscape format on legal-sized (8½ X 14") paper, front & back.  This means that if you are scanning the document with Acrobat Reader on your monitor, the page numbers will not necessarily be in order, however facing pages will always add up to a constant number, and when you print and collate the report, the pages should appear in proper sequence (see details at the bottom of this page)

Adobe Acrobat Reader is available for free from their website at www.Adobe.com.

Printing Booklet-style Ornifolks Reports from Acrobat Reader in double-sided landscape format

(detailed instructions)

a) load your printer with legal-size paper (if available)

b) from Adobe Acrobat Reader, go to file...page setup and...

c) select 'legal' for paper size (if you have no legal paper, then tic the 'fit to page' checkbox on the print menu and select the paper size you're using)

d) select 'portrait' for orientation

e) now go to file...print and

f) select 'odd pages only' for print: (at the bottom on the menu)

g) for starters, try setting print range to 1-4

h) click on OK and the first side of the first two sheets will print.

i) Take these sheets and return them to the paper feed bin (hint- last edge out should be the first edge in)

j) return to file...print and

k) select 'reverse pages'

l) select 'even pages only' for print: (at the bottom on the menu)

m) keep print range at pp. 1-4

n) click OK and the back of the first two sheets will print.

o) Repeat for the remainder of the document.  If your printer or PC has limited memory, you may not be able to print the entire document at one time.  If your printer stalls due to memory overrun you may need to reboot! For starters, try printing two pages at a time, then increase to three, etc.

p) You can now put the pages in order, fold the booklet, and staple it in the middle.

This may seem intimidating at first but after you practice a few times it will become second-nature.  When you have finished printing the document, hopefully there will be no unprinted or double-printed pages and no upside-down pages. As a check, notice that the sum of the page numbers of opposite-facing pages will equal a constant, on all pages, before collating and stapling.
